Liquid, Gummy, or Chewable — Which to Choose

Children's vitamins come in various forms: drops, syrups, chewable tablets, gummies, softgels. Each form has its advantages and disadvantages. Which is best for your child? This guide will help you choose the right form.

Liquid Drops and Syrups

Best for children 6 months to 3 years, for children who can't swallow tablets, when precise dosing is needed, for fast absorption.

Advantages: fastest absorption, easy dosing (drops or teaspoons), can be mixed with food or drink, often without artificial sweeteners. Disadvantages: may have a plant-like taste some don't like, must be shaken before use, limited shelf life after opening (usually 3-6 months). Example: ChildLife Essentials® Liquid Vitamin C, Vitamin D3 Drops.

Chewable Tablets (SoftChew)

Best for children 3+ years, for children who can chew on their own, while traveling, when the child refuses liquid forms. Advantages: convenient for transport (individual packets), pleasant taste and texture, precise dose per tablet, no refrigeration required. Disadvantages: choking risk for small children, may contain sweeteners (choose Stevia/Xylitol), slightly slower absorption. Example: ChildLife Essentials® Multi Vitamin SoftChew Gummies®.

Softgels

Best for Omega-3 (DHA), for fat-soluble vitamins, for children who can swallow or chew soft capsules. Advantages: tasteless (good choice for fish oil), concentrated dose in small volume, stable storage. Disadvantages: for very young children must be opened and squeezed out, some children dislike the texture. Example: ChildLife Essentials® Pure DHA.

Traditional Gummies — Avoid

Common gummy vitamins sold on the market often contain a lot of sugar (up to 3-5 g per tablet), artificial colors, artificial flavors, and fats. This is problematic because excess sugar can damage teeth, and children may overeat them thinking they're candy. If you want a gummy form, choose sugar-free alternatives with Stevia or Xylitol (like ChildLife SoftChew Gummies®).

How to Choose

  • Choose liquid if the child is 6 months to 3 years, can't swallow tablets, or you want precise dosing
  • Choose SoftChew chewables if the child is 3+ years, can chew on their own, you're often on the go
  • Choose softgels for Omega-3 and fat-soluble vitamins, when a concentrated dose is needed

Always read the label: absence of artificial colors and flavors, type of sweetener (Stevia/Xylitol is good, sugar is not), age-appropriate dosing.
